Dirk Kuyt scored late in extra time after an expected tough display by the Belgian Liege side to send Liverpool into the group stages of the UEFA Champions league. A hard fought game, the Reds came out with all cylinders on fire, pinning the youngsters into their half for the first half hour. slowly the tide began to turn as Standard began to play on the counter. Second half was more of the midfield battle, with neither keeper tested seriously.
Extra time loomed after a goalless first leg, and Liverpool piled on the pressure, which finally told as Babel came more into the game. His late cross into the box was duly met by the tireless Kuyt late into the second half of extra time. Standard Liege troop home with their heads held high, as they've been worthy opponents. Great things are bound to come from these young Belgian champions, but for now, Liverpool are back where they belong amongst the elite of Europe
